Seven people hauling a large fishing net across a Puerto Rican beach make up the subject here, and the photograph comes from the mid-1940s, when Edwin Rosskam was documenting the island for the federal government. Rosskam, a photographer and designer who worked with the Farm Security Administration and later the Office of War Information, traveled widely to record everyday labor and rural life. Fishing communities like this one were a common subject in his work, because net hauling was a shared, physical task that brought whole families and neighbors together on the shore. The record's caption tracings date the image to 1944 through 1946, though the details are unverified.
