Barranquitas is a mountain municipality in the interior of Puerto Rico, and this cityscape captures it in January 1942, only weeks after the United States entered the Second World War. The picture is a safety-film negative from the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection, a body of work that documented American life and places, including its overseas territories, during the Depression and the war years. Views like this one show the small town as it was in that period, when Puerto Rican communities were drawn into the wartime economy and the island's rural centers were a frequent subject for federal photographers.
