This print reproduces Elihu Vedder's *Anarchy*, a painted allegory made for the vestibule of the Library of Congress reading room in Washington. Vedder, an American painter who worked for many years in Rome, completed the work in 1896, the year the record notes. The Copley process used for this reproduction was a photomechanical method that let publishers issue faithful copies of paintings, and Curtis & Cameron of Boston produced this one in 1897. Its many figures and symbolic imagery reflect the late-nineteenth-century habit of decorating public buildings with allegories meant to express civic ideals.
