Here the satire turns on a scene that never took place. This British hand-colored etching, published by S.W. Fores in London in March 1797, shows Bonaparte receiving an audience in state at Rome. In reality, Napoleon was campaigning in northern Italy that spring, and the Papal States had just signed the Treaty of Tolentino in February 1797, surrendering territory and money to France. The print would have struck viewers as a jab at how thoroughly the French general had humbled the papacy, reducing the pope's authority to a backdrop for the conqueror.
