The Colosseum in this 1879 print is tied to a specific visit: the record places it during Ulysses S. Grant's world tour, which took the former president through Italy after his time in office. Grant reached Rome in early 1879, and the trip drew wide attention in American newspapers, so views of the city's famous sites often circulated as souvenirs of such travels. The amphitheater, completed under the Flavian emperors in the late first century, was by then a ruin that tourists visited to see the arches and tiered seating left open to the Roman sky.
