The Baths of Caracalla rose on the southeast side of Rome's old center, built in the early third century as one of the largest public bathing complexes the ancient city ever had. This albumen print belongs to an album of photographs of Jerusalem, Alexandria, Cairo and Rome, a set that shows how travelers and archaeologists of the later nineteenth century were drawn to ruins across the Mediterranean world. By the 1860s to 1880s, the vast brick shell was a favorite subject for visitors touring the excavated grounds, and photographs like this one helped carry its scale to viewers who never made the trip.
