Rome is reached "by way of the Mont-Cenis" in this color travel poster, which pairs the Alpine route with a view of the Roman Forum. Geo Dorival is credited with the design, and the Cannes firm Affiches Photographiques Robaudy printed it around 1920. The Mont Cenis crossing linked France and Italy by road and rail, so the poster promoted a journey as much as a destination. Its halftone reproduction of a photograph in strong color reflects the period's efforts to make railway and tourism posters eye-catching for travelers.
