On the night of 12 to 13 July 1789, Parisians without any official orders organized their own watch over the city, a scene this engraving sets out in its title: *Paris gardé par le peuple*. The city was tense after King Louis XVI dismissed the popular finance minister Jacques Necker, and residents formed citizen patrols and militia units that gathered arms and guarded neighborhoods. Dominique Vivant Denon-era painter Prieur drew the composition, and Berthault engraved it for the *Collection complète des tableaux historiques de la révolution française*, published in Paris in 1804. Its place as plate 11 in that series shows how Revolutionary events were turned into a visual record within about fifteen years.
