Few images of the siege capture its strangeness as directly as this lithograph, which shows the balloons that carried mail and passengers out of a Paris cut off by Prussian forces. Albert Tissandier drew and lithographed the sheet, and the publisher E. Bulla issued it in the decade after the war. Between September 1870 and the armistice in early 1871, dozens of balloons lifted off from Paris, carrying letters, official dispatches, and a few people past the enemy lines, while pigeons flew messages back into the city. The print is a useful record of how a modern capital turned to lighter-than-air travel when every other route was closed.
