In this lithograph, the joke is a reversal: a French pig and a Frenchman are shown as curiosities in a Peking garden modeled on Paris's Jardin des Plantes, while Chinese onlookers stare at them as if they were exotic animals. The print is dated 1854, signed by H.D., and lithographed by Destouches. It comments on French presence in China during a decade of growing foreign pressure on the Qing court, and its satire of mutual curiosity and misunderstanding is what makes it worth a closer look.
