Rather than a view of the city, this plate is a reconstruction: a restoration drawing of an ancient Roman architectural fragment, prepared by G. Ancelet and reproduced as a heliogravure by the Paris firm Lemercier. It appeared as plate 21 in volume 1 of Espouy's *Fragments d'architecture antique*, a French publication of measured and restored studies of classical buildings. Such restorations were valued by architecture students and scholars who could not travel to Rome to see the ruins. The date given in the record is uncertain, so the plate's exact year should be checked against the publication itself.
