This photograph records a tholus, a small domed structure, bearing the motto "E Pluribus Unum," the Latin phrase on the Great Seal of the United States. The sculptor, Thomas Crawford, was an American artist who worked in Rome during the 1850s, and the inscription and date of 1856 place the design in his studio there. Crawford's Roman workshop produced much of the sculpture for the expanding U.S. Capitol in these years, when the country was building its national symbols in marble and bronze. The image is worth noticing for its record of a neoclassical design made abroad for an American civic project.
