The Column of Trajan, raised in Rome in the early second century to commemorate the Emperor Trajan's campaigns in Dacia, is the subject here, shown as an engraving by Ambrosius Brambilla. The plate was issued as an illustration in a 1773 Roman publication devoted to the column's spiral reliefs, which wind up the monument's shaft in a continuous band of carved scenes. Eighteenth-century scholars and travelers often studied and copied these reliefs, since they offered a detailed record of Roman military dress, equipment, and warfare. Its appearance in a dedicated survey shows how the monument had become a standard object of antiquarian interest by that time.
