Drawn from the Palatine Hill, this view looks across the ruins of ancient Rome toward the Colosseum, a vantage that places the amphitheater among the broken walls and tumbled stone of the imperial palace grounds. Joseph Pennell, the American illustrator and printmaker, made it in pastel and pencil on brown paper around 1904 to 1908, during the years he traveled in Italy. The sheet belongs to a group of Italian drawings tied to Henry James's *Italian Hours*, though the record notes that this one was never reproduced in that book. Pennell's pencil signature on the reverse identifies its maker.
