A pilot poses with the parachute room visible behind him at Ramitelli, Italy, in March 1945, when the 332nd Fighter Group, the all-Black unit later known as the Tuskegee Airmen, was based there. Parachutes were packed and stored in such rooms between flights, so the setting ties the airman to the riggers who kept his gear ready. Toni Frissell, known for her fashion and society photography, made this portrait series during the war, recording the pilots during a period when their service was rarely shown in the press.
