The Leaning Tower stands beside the cathedral in Pisa and tilts because its foundations settled into soft ground after construction began in 1173. This stereograph, published around 1897 in Washington, D.C., by J.F. Jarvis and sold by Underwood & Underwood, pairs the tower with the Duomo, whose building began in 1063 and which the card describes as 800 years old. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images fused into a single three-dimensional scene, a popular way for households of the period to visit distant landmarks. Even on a small card, the tower's lean is easy to see, which helped make it a favorite travel subject.
