Washing lines and a communal laundry give this stereograph its subject: a working scene from Genoa, the port city on Italy's Ligurian coast, caught around 1902. Public washing places were a common sight in Italian towns of the period, where households without running water at home carried their linen to shared basins, often fed by a fountain or channel, to scrub and rinse it in company. The card is one of a series of stereoviews of foreign street life that were sold to parlor viewers, who could see the scene in depth through a hand-held viewer.
