The subject is the row of tombs along the road outside Pompeii's gates, the funerary district Romans built beyond the city walls, where burial within the town was not allowed. The print was made by Sommer, a German-born photographer based in Naples, whose studio sold many views of the excavated town to nineteenth-century travelers. Visitors leaving the city would have passed these monuments, which were designed to keep the names and images of the dead in public view. The caption card records no date and its data is unverified, but the picture reflects the wide interest in Pompeii that drew photographers there once excavations were well under way.
