Joseph Byron's 1902 print shows Little Italy in New York City, a neighborhood then packed with Italian immigrants, most from southern Italy, who had settled in dense blocks around Mulberry Street. Byron was a well-known New York photographer who documented city streets and stage productions for decades, and the caption card links this view to the theater and to plays, though that connection is not confirmed. Street scenes like this one show tenement life, crowded storefronts and busy sidewalks as they looked before the neighborhood began to shrink in the twentieth century.
