A woman in a dark dress stands among rough debris and makeshift shelter, trying to make a roof for her family out of whatever the earthquake left behind. The stereograph records the aftermath of the December 28, 1908, earthquake that destroyed much of Messina and Reggio Calabria on the Strait of Messina, a disaster that killed well over 100,000 people. Stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers to American and European viewers, so the scene reached homes far from Sicily as a lesson in how ordinary survivors coped with the loss.
