Few pictures show the return of displaced families as plainly as this view of carts on the road into Sacile, a small town in northeastern Italy. The town lies in the Friuli region near the Livenza River, close to a front that shifted after the Italian defeat at Caporetto in late 1917, when many residents fled ahead of advancing Austro-Hungarian troops. Repatriation followed as the lines settled, and this print belongs to the American National Red Cross Collection, which recorded the relief work and civilian life of the period.
