A small shrine holding a framed portrait of Carin Göring stands inside Hermann Göring's Berlin apartment on the Kaiserdamm, a domestic memorial that few interiors of the period show so openly. Carin, Hermann's first wife, was Swedish-born and died in 1931, and Göring kept her memory close, later naming his country estate Carinhall after her. The photograph comes from an album of interior views of the apartment, part of the Göring photo archive now held by the Library of Congress. Today it is worth reading as a record of how the household chose to present itself, with the shrine's careful placement suggesting a devotion that was both private and deliberately visible.
