Completed in 1894, the new Reichstag building in Berlin was designed to house the legislature of the German Empire, which had been unified only in 1871. Architect Paul Wallot gave its massive Neo-Renaissance facade and central dome a commanding presence, and the building quickly became a symbol of the young nation's parliamentary ambitions. Issued by the H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, around 1902, this stereograph was meant for use in a stereoscope, a popular parlor device that let viewers see distant landmarks in three dimensions.
