Few hotels in Berlin were as well known as the Adlon, which stood on Unter den Linden beside the Brandenburg Gate and had hosted diplomats, film stars, and travelers since it opened in 1907. This print records the building after the fighting of 1945, when bombing and fire gutted much of its interior and left its facade scarred. The photograph was likely taken in the years immediately after the war, when Berlin's central boulevards were lined with ruins like this one. It is a useful view of how the city's grand hotels looked once the war had ended.
