Schneewinkel is the name penciled on the back of this print, which places the view at a specific spot near Berchtesgaden, the Bavarian market town tucked against the Austrian border in the Alps. Its date is only known to fall between 1900 and 1920, and the photographer is not recorded. The print came to the Library of Congress from the Sigmund Freud Archives in New York, and it had not been processed when it was catalogued. Early twentieth-century landscape photographs like this one often served travelers and collectors who wanted images of alpine scenery.
