Hotel Inglaterra, which stood on the Parque Central in Havana, is the subject here, and the card presents it as the finest hotel in Cuba. The stereograph dates to about 1899, a year after the Spanish-American War ended and during the period of American administration on the island, when American publishers were eager to sell views of newly visible places. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm, produced the card, and Underwood & Underwood, the firm known for distributing stereoviews, sold it. Paired images like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave a sense of depth and made distant places feel close to home.
