Cienfuegos, a port on Cuba's southern coast, is the setting here, and the card shows Spanish soldiers preparing to leave the island for Spain. Spain lost Cuba after the Spanish-American War of 1898, and the Treaty of Paris that December ended Spanish rule there, so withdrawing troops were a common sight in the months that followed. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm, published the stereograph in 1899 for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave American audiences a close look at a moment of the war's aftermath.
