A worker swings a machete through a dense stand of sugar cane in Banes, a town in Holguin Province on Cuba's northeastern coast. The town was closely tied to the United Fruit Company, whose sugar operations dominated the surrounding landscape in the 1940s, and the photograph's credit line reflects that corporate origin. Cane cutting was still largely manual labor at the time, and images like this one were often circulated to present the industry's scale and the human effort behind it. Looking closely, you can see how the tall stalks press in on the figure, a reminder of how physically demanding the harvest was.
