This stereograph shows a wharf at Tampa, Florida, on the day a ship set out for Santiago de Cuba. In the spring of 1898, after the United States declared war on Spain, Tampa became a major staging ground, and troops and supplies gathered there before crossing to Cuba that June. The card was published in New York by Strohmeyer & Wyman around 1898. Its two slightly offset views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the crowded docks and waiting ships a sense of depth.
