The title on this stereograph says 63 Spanish soldiers were killed in the steeple of the church at El Caney, a village northeast of Santiago de Cuba. In early July 1898, American infantry under General Henry Lawton attacked the Spanish garrison that had dug in around the stone church and nearby buildings. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1899, when many American viewers wanted to see the Cuban battlefields their soldiers had fought over.
