The Binondo church and its attached convent stand in the district of Binondo, long the commercial heart of Manila and home to a large community of Chinese Catholics since the late sixteenth century. Dominican friars founded the parish, and the church's tall facade and convent buildings made it a landmark for travelers arriving by river. This stereograph was issued around 1899, just as the United States was taking control of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, so American viewers would have seen it as a glimpse of a place newly in the news. Stereo cards like this were meant to be viewed through a special lens, which gave the scene a sense of depth and presence.
