Along the Pasig River, the wharf below the Bridge of Spain shows the working waterfront that ran through the center of Manila around 1899. The bridge, a stone crossing from the Spanish colonial period, linked the walled old city of Intramuros with the districts on the far bank, so the landings beneath it were busy points for trade and travel. The year was a turbulent one, since Spain had ceded the islands to the United States after the 1898 war and American rule was just beginning. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereographs of distant places to home viewers, though the caption details have not been verified.
