A soldier's meal on the advance line near Caloocan, a town just north of Manila, sets this stereograph apart: the caption shows American infantry eating at mess in the field. The card dates to about 1899, during the Philippine-American War that followed the Spanish-American War, when U.S. troops pushed out from Manila against Filipino forces. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope to give home audiences a three-dimensional look at distant campaigns. The caption details are unverified, and the scene predates the World War I and II material on this board.
