Infantrymen advance in extended order across open, level ground, firing from individual rifle pits as they go. The picture shows Polish soldiers serving in the German army, a reminder that Germany drew many recruits from its Polish-speaking provinces, and that some of them fought on the East Prussian front against Russia in the first autumn of the war. This rotogravure ran in the picture section of *The New York Times* on November 22, 1914, when American readers were following the eastern campaign closely.
