Trainees of the 9th Infantry Division practice a gas drill at Fort Dix, New Jersey, in this U.S. Army Signal Corps photograph. Chemical weapons had been used on a large scale in the First World War, so the Army trained new soldiers to put on, clear, and wear their gas masks until the routine became second nature. Fort Dix, first established as Camp Dix in 1917, was one of the large training installations the Army used in the 1940s, and Signal Corps photographers recorded such exercises for official and public use.
