Malolos, a town north of Manila, was the seat of the short-lived Philippine Republic that Emilio Aguinaldo led in 1899, and American troops took it that spring during the Philippine-American War. This stereograph shows Company I of the 22nd U.S. Infantry in camp there around 1899, according to its caption card, which the library notes is unverified. Stereo views like this one were sold in sets and viewed through a stereoscope, so they offer a close look at daily army life, including the tents and camp arrangements, at the start of the American presence in the islands.
