A Russian officer sits at a laid table, ready to eat, while a Japanese soldier snatches the meal away, a playful picture of victory over an enemy force. The sheet belongs to the series *Nihon banzai hyakusen hyakushō* (*Long live Japan: one hundred victories, one hundred laughs*), a set of color woodcuts from around 1904 to 1905, the years of the Russo-Japanese War. Publishers produced many satirical prints like this one to rally public support and mock Russian forces, whose setbacks on land and at sea made lively subjects for popular entertainment. Its subject tags also name fortifications, which hints at the military setting behind the joke.
