A Union soldier drifts into a daydream of home in this hand-colored lithograph, a subject that speaks to the homesickness many men felt in camp and on the march. Currier & Ives published it in New York sometime between 1861 and 1865, when the firm produced large numbers of sentimental scenes for a public eager to see the war through the lens of family and hearth. Prints like this were inexpensive, colored by hand after printing, and sold widely, so they show how northern civilians wanted to picture their soldiers.
