Rather than naming a soldier, this lithograph leaves its blanks open. The spaces for name, company and regiment were printed empty, so the certificate could be completed for any man recognized for bravery and good conduct. Issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives in 1863, it dates to the Civil War, when the company produced many inexpensive patriotic prints for a wide market. The printed wording offered families and units a way to mark a soldier's service, and the record's reference to a catalog raisonné shows the design is documented among the firm's known works.
