In February 1943, a young boy in Daytona Beach, Florida, was photographed with a caption stating his ambition to become a soldier. The image survives as a nitrate negative from the Office of War Information, the federal agency that produced wartime publicity and documentary photography during World War II. Its caption captures a common wartime attitude, as many American boys of the period grew up with military service on their minds. Nitrate film is chemically unstable and deteriorates over time, so surviving examples from this era are valuable for their rarity as well as their subject.
