A bayonet charge is an unusual subject for a naval base, and the record ties this scene to the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois. During World War II the base trained large numbers of recruits, and Black recruits were held in segregated units, most notably at Camp Robert Smalls, until the Navy began opening more roles to them in 1942 and 1943. Training photographs like this one were often circulated to show the public the nation's servicemen at work. The record gives no firm date, so the 1941 to 1945 range is only an estimate.
