A boy identified as a war orphan from the Apennine mountains sits on a low wall beside a soldier of the American Red Cross, and the photograph's title makes the pair the focus. The caption card places the scene in the Pontine Marshes and dates it between 1914 and 1918, though those details are unverified, and the marshes lie well south of the main Italian front. During the war the American Red Cross ran relief work in Italy, and children left without parents by years of fighting were among those it aided.
