A young soldier stands against a plain wall with a bandolier of cartridges slung across his chest. The catalog ties the photograph to the SS-Panzerdivision Hitlerjugend, an armored division formed in 1943 largely from Hitler Youth members, many of them only 16 or 17 years old. The division fought in Normandy in June 1944, where it suffered heavy losses against Allied forces. Wartime images like this one were often used for propaganda, so the pose and equipment may have been chosen to suggest readiness and resolve.
