Few things on a Civil War print are as personal as a regiment's own record, and this hand-colored Currier & Ives lithograph was made for the Thirty-Ninth Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers, Company G. The firm, based in New York, produced many sheets like this in the early 1860s for soldiers, their families and recruiting efforts. Its catalog notes that the regiment was mustered into United States service on September 2, 1862, during the second year of the war, when the Union was filling its ranks with new volunteers.
