Drawn in pencil and dated January 13, 1864, this sketch is titled "Borrowing a chimney" and is linked to Rappahannock Station, Virginia. That winter the Army of the Potomac had settled into camps along the Rappahannock, and many soldiers built log huts with bunks, fireplaces, and stick-and-mud chimneys to get through the cold months. The drawing's wry title points to the ingenuity and humor of men making do with scarce materials. It belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War drawing collection, a group of field sketches that record everyday camp life as much as battles.
