A soldier clears the ground in a broad jump while carrying his full field equipment, a demanding load that makes the exercise a test of strength as well as skill. The Chinese Military Pictorial Service issued numbered photoprints like this one to document army life during the Second Sino-Japanese War, which lasted from 1937 to 1945 and pushed the Nationalist government inland to Chongqing. Images of drill and physical conditioning were meant to show soldiers building the stamina a long, grinding war would demand. The caption's date range of 1938 to 1943 is unverified, so the exact moment the photograph was taken is uncertain.
