A soldier flung into the branches of a tree by a mine or shell blast is the striking subject here, a scene that came to stand for the violence of trench warfare in France. The card is a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the two side-by-side images merge into a single picture with depth. Copyrighted by Over There Review, Inc., it dates to around 1926, long after the fighting ended, when such views still reached audiences who remembered the war. The record notes that its caption information is unverified, so the exact location and circumstances of the scene remain uncertain.
