A military doctor delivers an injection into a soldier's arm in this 1912 scene from San Antonio, Texas, home to Fort Sam Houston and a major Army post at the time. By the early 1910s the Army was giving routine immunizations, including typhoid inoculations introduced to the service around 1909, to limit disease in crowded barracks and camps. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York press agency whose wire photos recorded news and everyday life in the early twentieth century. Its title and date come from old caption data that has not been independently verified.
