The caption promises a cavalry charge, and this stereograph shows the Ninth U.S. Cavalry, one of the Black regiments known as the Buffalo Soldiers, posed with sabers drawn in 1898. That summer the regiment fought in Cuba, including at San Juan Heights, where its troopers served alongside the Rough Riders. Strohmeyer & Wyman issued the card in New York as a stereograph, a pair of images meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The publisher's wording reflects the segregated language of the day and shows how these soldiers were presented to the public during the war.
