Hamlet, North Carolina, grew up around the railroad, and this photograph shows the separate canteen run by the local Red Cross for Black residents and servicemen during the First World War. Canteens like this one, set up along rail lines, handed out food, coffee, and other small comforts to soldiers whose trains stopped for a few minutes at a time. Wartime Red Cross work in the South was largely organized along racial lines, so a branch labeled "colored" reflects the segregated system of the period as much as the war effort itself. The caption information is unverified, so the exact date and the people pictured are worth confirming before relying on them.
